Setting the Record Straight |
The claims of Steve King’s opponent in his recent, last minute ads are false. Steve King was a cosponsor of the original stand alone GI bill legislation H.R. 5740. The Post-9/11 Veterans Educational Assistance Act of 2008 (H.R. 5740) was enacted as Title V of P.L. 110-252 (H.R. 2642), the FY08 supplemental. Steve King voted YES when this bill passed the House on 6/19/08 (and became law). Steve King has earned the endorsement of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Political Action Committee (VFW-PAC) Board of Directors. According to Larry W. Rivers, Director of VFW-PAC, the endorsement was based on comments from VFW leaders in Iowa and King’s “strong support for veterans, national security/defense, and military personnel issues”. King has worked for our veterans in Congress. Here are a few examples: King supported S. 3023, Veterans Benefits Improvement Act (PL 110 – 389) which passed the House on September 24, 2008. The law adds job protections for returning veterans, increases the opportunity for injured veterans to participate in independent living programs, allows deploying service members to terminate or suspend cell phone contracts without penalty, and provides additional support to veteran-owned small businesses when contracting with the government. King supported S. 2162, Veterans’ Mental Health and Other Care Improvements Act of 2008 (PL 110-387) which became law. This law requires the VA to raise its current mileage reimbursement rate for veterans to the rate at which federal employees are reimbursed when using private automobiles for official business so that veterans can afford to access VA care.
