KING: AMERICAN ENERGY INDEPENDENCE NOW |
WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Congressman Steve King today voted “no” on a bill that was proposed by liberal House leadership because it would not provide real relief for Americans at the gas pump. The bill placed new restrictions on petroleum and natural gas exploration in the Outer Continental Shelf along with increasing taxes on the petroleum industry. It also extended the wind energy production tax credit and biodiesel blender’s credit for one year.
“We must grow America’s energy independence and open up all American energy now, every form,” said Congressman King, “We need to be thinking all energy all the time. Drill ANWR, drill the Outer Continental Shelf, develop the oil from the oil shale areas in the West, and open up all of our natural gas. Let's do coal, let's do nuclear, let's do ethanol, let's do biodiesel, let's do wind, let's do solar, all forms of American energy, it’s just too bad that the Democrat energy bill today did not do that”.
The energy bill that was proposed by the House Democrats kept all submerged lands from 3 to 50 miles permanently closed to exploration. It included a provision that allowed individual states to authorize drilling from 50 to 100 miles out. Anything beyond 100 miles would be opened to all access.
As many Republican members pointed out during debate, without any state revenue sharing, it is highly unlikely that states will approve of any offshore production.
The bill did not contain any provision to allow for exploration in the Arctic National Wildlife Reserve or incentives to develop the nuclear and clean coal industries. The bill also allows environmental lawyers to tie up oil leases in red tape.
