King Glad Crop Is Strong |
WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Congressman Steve King commented today on the crop report released today by the US Department of Agriculture. The World Agriculture Supply and Demand Estimates (WASDE) predict the size of this year’s US corn harvest. According to USDA, American farmers are projected to have second-highest average yield and the second-largest corn crop in history. World production of corn is expected to increase to record levels to meet rising demand.
“The August crop report should allow the agriculture world to breathe a little sigh of relief. The 12.3 billion bushels of projected corn crop is the second largest on record. The 2008 soybean crop is projected to be the fourth largest on record. This, along with the largest corn crop ever last year should help livestock producers catch their breath. Livestock producers have been feeling the squeeze of high feed costs,” said King.
“While this report shows the great potential of this year’s crop, we still need to avoid an early frost, given the lag in crop maturity, if we are to realize this potential,” added King.
