King: Court Ruling on CRP Will Hurt Farmers
Washington, D.C. – Congressman Steve King issued the following statement on a U.S. Western District Court ruling halting all haying and grazing on 24 million acres of CRP land.

“I am disappointed that an activist judge in Seattle would block opening CRP land to haying and grazing.  The USDA took steps necessary to ensure that the haying and grazing would be after the primary nesting season.”

“The nesting season is effectively over except for a very small number of stragglers. We will lose a larger percentage of livestock producers than birds if we let a Seattle judge substitute his opinion for that of the people.”

“High grain prices are squeezing farmers and many need the extra forage CRP land would provide in order to offset some of their skyrocketing feed costs.”

“I am curious if these plaintiffs realize that all they have done is provide more incentive for farmers to leave the CRP program.”
