King Wins Pentagon Reform to Support National Guard
Washington, D.C. — Congressman Steve King today passed an amendment that will continue to reform the role of the National Guard Bureau in the Pentagon. The amendment orders a benchmark report to Congress on reforms already passed by the Congress to help empower the National Guard. These reforms were intended to give the National Guard a clearer voice in policy and budgetary discussions within the Pentagon.

King’s amendment was passed this afternoon in the U.S. House of Representatives as part of the yearly national defense bill that directs the operation of the Pentagon and the armed forces. The amendment was also supported by the House Armed Services Committee.

King made the following statement about the National Guard and his amendment:

“Iowa National Guard Members serve our state, our country and also have full-time jobs. They are our citizen soldiers. These men and women deserve our support and help whenever they need it.”

“Since 2001, the National Guard has been on the front lines in the global war against radical Islamic jihadists. The Pentagon, however, has been slow to address the problems of the Guard, often creating needless difficulties in the lives of our soldiers. That’s why we passed National Guard “empowerment” reforms in last year’s national defense bill.”

“More reforms may be necessary to give the National Guard Bureau the stature it needs within the Pentagon. My amendment is designed to allow Congress to hear from the National Guard Bureau. The top officer is directed to report whether the reforms are working or if we should go further to assure that our citizen soldiers are being appropriately served by the government that asks so much of them.”
