King Secures $858,000 for Hungry Canyons Alliance |
WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Congressman Steve King today announced $858,000 in federal funds secured for Hungry Canyons Alliance Project as part of H.R. 2764, Consolidated Appropriations Act for Fiscal Year 2008. The Hungry Canyons Alliance works to research and implement solutions to the problems associated with stream channel erosion as related to Loess soils. These funds will protect approximately $5.1 million worth of property and 1.3 million tons of sediment from stream erosion by building streambed stabilization structures. The funds secured by Congressman King will provide continuing support for the Project.
“Western Iowa is graced with unique, windblown loess soils that were deposited at the end of the last Ice Age. As marshes were drained and developed into farmland, many streams were straightened with steeper stream grades. This $858,000 will go a long way in working toward preventing stream channel erosion,” King said.
After the House passage yesterday, the bill must now be signed into law by the President.
