King Secures $1 Million for Little Sioux Flood Prevention Project |
WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Congressman Steve King today announced $1,037,000 in federal funds secured for Little Sioux Watershed Project as part of H.R. 2764, Consolidated Appropriations Act for Fiscal Year 2008.
The Little Sioux Flood Prevention Project was authorized in 1946 to address flooding and gullying in the Little Sioux River watershed in western Iowa. Portions of Harrison, Monona, Woodbury, Ida, Sac, Plymouth, Cherokee, Buena Vista and O’Brien Counties are in the authorized watershed area. The funds secured by Congressman King will provide continuing support for the Project.
“Funding for The Little Sioux Flood Prevention Project is vital to protect agriculture, infrastructure, and waterways in a large portion of Western Iowa. The project does its part to protect our local economies and promote development. It is part of our effort to keep the raindrop where it falls,” King said.
Since its inception, nearly 500 water retention structures and 450 full flow structures have been built, many to stabilize roads. More than 8,200 miles of terraces, 16 miles of floodways, and 625 acres of waterways have been built. Since 1990, work has been limited to land treatment practices like terraces and stream channel stabilization.
After the House passage yesterday, the bill must now be signed into law by the President.
