SPENCER MAN INDUCTED INTO
KING'S WAR HEROES PROJECT
King Effort to Archive
Personal Stories of Fifth
District War Heroes
SPENCER - U.S. Congressman
Steve King (IA-05) today
took his Fifth District War
Heroes Project to Spencer,
where Frank Rose, a Spencer
WWII Navy veteran, joined
the ranks of those western
Iowans whose stories will be
forever preserved at the
Library of Congress in
Washington, D.C.
The project, which King
launched this year, aims to
preserve the personal
stories of western Iowa's
war veterans at the U.S.
Library of Congress in
Washington, D.C. His goal
is to motivate veterans of
all wars in the Fifth
District to contribute their
personal stories for
historians to preserve and
educate American generations
to come. King will deliver
the stories and artifacts to
the Library of Congress when
he returns to Washington.
Frank Rose told King his
story of being part of a
taskforce that used
themselves as bait to lure
and then attack German
U-boats.
"Those who have defended our
liberties at war are heroes
to our country," said King.
"We must make sure we
document these stories about
the work and sacrifice of
Iowans who have served this
country as soon as
possible."
King created the Fifth
District War Heroes Project
in conjunction with the
Veterans History Project at
the Library of Congress. The
Library is requesting video
or audiotape interviews with
war veterans, as well as
personal artifacts, such as
photos or letters home.
As the average age of WWII
veterans increases, America
loses 1,700 first-hand
witnesses to that important
period in World history
every day. Those interested
in contributing personal
stories and artifacts to the
Fifth District Heroes
Project may contact King's
