KING COMMENDS HARKIN FOR VOTE ON BORDER
FENCE
WASHINGTON
- Iowa Congressman Steve King today
released the following statement
commending Iowa Senator Tom Harkin for
his votes to erect and fund fencing
along the southern border:
"Americans
have already expressed their desire for
a barrier along the southern border to
gain control of our illegal immigration
problem and direct traffic to the legal
ports of entry. The House voted to build
a fence in December, as part of a plan
to establish enforcement first
immigration reform policy, and in May
the Senate also passed their measure to
build a fence, and yesterday voted to
fund it.
"Senator
Harkin, no question my ideological
opposite, has also recognized the need
for a border barrier and voted twice to
support the fence. He deserves a pat on
the back for his vote to secure America.
"The
country is unified across the political
spectrum on this issue. We must secure
our border first and only from there can
we begin to root out our illegal
immigration problem, return jobs to
American workers, and eliminate the
entry of criminals, illegal drugs and
terrorists that are the direct result of
a wide open border. What some called a
radical idea a year ago has now become a
mainstream idea."
In a
series of immigration reform events
across Iowa August 22, 2005, King called
to erect a border fence.
