USPS TO HALT STUDY OF SIOUX CITY MAIL
PROCESSING CENTER
WASHINGTON -
U.S. Congressman Steve King today announced
he has received word that the Postal Service
will halt its study of proposed
consolidation of the Sioux City mail
processing center until the Postal Service's
Inspector General conducts his audit.
Today the
Postmaster General notified King of his
intentions to halt the study, in response to
a request by King on May 30, to halt the
study until an audit is completed. Last
week, the Inspector General of the USPS
agreed, at the urging of King and Senators
Grassley and Harkin, to conduct an audit of
the study used to determine whether the mail
processing center would be consolidated.
King has long
been concerned with the parameters under
which the study was conducted.
"It does not make business sense for the
postal service to make a premature decision
that would cost us our postmark," said King,
"when we don't know if a thorough
cost-benefit analysis has been conducted. I
hope the Inspector General's audit gives the
Postal Service and the people of Sioux City
the information we need to know if the study
is legitimate."
